About The Role

Come and help us to build our customer platform backend and make an impact on Earth!

Planet has an unparalleled dataset; we observe the entire Earth everyday. Serving valuable insights with this data is challenging! Customer platform engineers are focused on helping our customers find value in our platform so that they remain continuously happy customers.

As a frontend engineer, you will help customers by building beautiful and fast user experiences that delight our customers. Frontend engineers at Planet especially focus on being able to render and reason with geospatial data.

In this role, you will be challenged to: push the envelope in building and rendering UIs that often include geospatial data quickly, have a sharp product and business sense, and think big yet deliver value incrementally.

Impact You’ll Own

Work as an integral member of a cross-functional team focused on improving customer journeys such as: Building out user experiences to search, browse, and analyze geospatial data Optimize slippy maps to work performantly with many layers and POIs Build an intuitive navigation experience for the Planet Explorer webapp Build usage report experiences that help customers understand the value they are getting from their contracts Operate as a specialist that understands user interaction behaviors and partners closely with designers to deliver great experiences Participate in an on-call rotation to ensure our systems remain up 24/7

Senior Applicants Will

1. Help develop a vision and roadmap to improve our frontend stack
2. Help to sequence and de-risk projects to ensure timely delivery of value
3. Collaborate with product and other cross-functional stakeholders to co-create an impactful customer experience.

Experience In

What You Bring:

1. Javascript, including concepts like asynchronous programming, closures, types, and ES6.
2. React, complete understanding of its main fundamentals like Virtual DOM, component lifecycle, etc.
3. Experience with writing automated tests (e.g. Jest, React Testing Library)
4. Building delightful UI/UX
5. Working in cross-functional teams that put customer requirements first
6. Adaptability and openness to changes and challenges
7. A positive, can-do attitude to work

Senior Applicants Will Also Have

1. Clear communication skills that resonate with engineers, cross functional stakeholders, and executives
2. A track record of designing, building, and evolving software systems at scale
3. Passion for improving developer velocity
4. A track record of mentorship and growing other engineers

Experience In

What Makes You Stand Out:

1. Geospatial experience (GDAL, OGR, etc.)
2. Experience with slippy maps (i.e. OpenLayers)
3. Web Infrastructure and performance
4. API Design
5. Oncall experience
