About the Role


When news breaks, readers from around the world turn to The New York Times for trustworthy, authoritative coverage. Every day, journalists at The New York Times report more than 200 stories from dozens of countries around the world on topics ranging from major international events to the best way to roast a chicken. Those stories are read, listened to, and watched by more than 100 million users each month across our web and mobile products.


As a world-class digital media business, we are continuing to expand our deep investment in engineering and are looking for a Staff Engineer to join the Web Platforms team. This is an opportunity to make a big impact on a vital team, and you’ll be part of an engineering organization that values empathy, collaboration, transparency, diversity, and learning. In this role, you will report to Tim Fisher and work cross-functionally with engineers, designers, and product managers to deliver capabilities across our suite of products.


About The Team


The Web Platforms team enables the development of highly scalable, secure, sustainable, and consistent web products at NYT by delivering high quality full stack common components, libraries and frameworks, and by providing innovative & well-informed thought leadership on best practices around web application architecture and operations.


What You’ll Do


  • Translate broad business goals into practical technical solutions with realistic milestones
  • Organize and guide balanced decisions across your peers for architecture, design, and implementation details
  • Gather support on your technical strategy through collaborative discussions with adjacent teams and other partners
  • Create strategies for delivering new capabilities while paying down technical debt and investing in engineering excellence
  • Advise engineering management and product management on assessing technical complexity and resourcing needs
  • Support engineers in your team in developing architecture, design, development, testing, delivery and operations systems and solutions
  • Mentor engineers to level up the group's abilities


About You


  • 6+ years full stack web engineering experience
  • A passion for web development
  • Strong experience with JavaScript, ReactJS, NodeJS
  • Experience building complex distributed systems at scale, with an emphasis on fault tolerance, stability, observability and operability.
  • Experience with public cloud platform services: Amazon Web Services (AWS) or Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
  • Nice if you are knowledgeable in any of: Python, Typescript
  • Conversant in Lean, DevSecOps, GitOps, etc.
  • Kanban or other agile methodologies
  • Accessibility (A11Y)

This role may require limited on-call hours. An on-call schedule will be determined when you join, taking into account team size and other variables.


The annual base pay range for this role is between $160,000.00 and $175,000.00.
