Nationwide are hiring a Consultant, Software Engineer (Apigee, APIs, Kong)

This role will work a hybrid schedule coming into the Columbus, Ohio office 2 days per week.

We are seeking a Technology Lead to support the Integration Governance Team within the Technology Integration Platforms organization. The team owns the tools, standards, and accelerators that ensure integration solutions across Nationwide are secure, resilient, and consistently delivered. 

In this pivotal role, you will be at the forefront of ensuring the security and integrity of our AI, APIs, and Event Streams, playing a crucial part in safeguarding our organization’s digital infrastructure.  APIs are the number one threat vector for malicious actors to Nationwide Technology and the Financial Services industry at large, therefore ensuring that Nationwide's integrations are secure, resilient, and operational is paramount.

The ideal candidate will have the following characteristics:

• Experience developing software via Agile software development methodologies

• Proven ability to document and share knowledge effectively

• Technology depth and experience with designing, building and supporting APIs and Event Streams

Technical skills:

• Full stack development experience

• Java / Springboot and Angular development

• Microservices / REST APIs

• Experience with Apigee, Kong, or Amazon API Gateway

• Experience building applications that interact with Kafka

• Cloud Native applications in AWS or Azure

• Docker container architecture managed by Kubernetes

• CI/CD pipeline enablement

Key Responsibilities:

• Responsible for applying secure software and systems engineering practices throughout the delivery lifecycle to ensure our data and technology solutions are protected from threats and vulnerabilities.

• Mentor and train other team members on design techniques, tools, and coding standards.

• Provide strategic technical advice on using technology to achieve business and technology goals/strategy.

• Drive cross-collaboration and execution of projects across multiple teams.

• Analyze solutions, develop, test, debug, document, and deploy moderately complex software according to standards and best practices.

• Champion the adoption and effective use of DevSecOps practices, tooling, and techniques to improve software quality, security, automation, and delivery efficiency across teams.

• Manages multiple medium to large project priorities, deadlines, and deliverables proactively.

May perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Reporting Relationships: Reports to a Technology Manager/Director.

Typical Skills and Experiences:

Education: Undergraduate studies in computer science, management information systems, mathematics, or related field are strongly preferred.

Experience: Six or more years of programming, software engineering or systems analysis experience. Three years of experience in project management is preferred.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Hands-on technical leadership experience leading project teams and setting technical direction. Proficiency in one or more programming languages such as Java, C++, Python, and JavaScript. Knowledge of software development lifecycle. Proven ability to tackle sophisticated business and development problems. Ability to thrive in a team environment. Insurance/financial services industry knowledge a plus.

Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.

Staffing exceptions to the above must be approved by the hiring manager’s leader and Human Resources Business Partner.

Working Conditions: Hybrid to normal office environment. Associates may have on-call responsibility after normal working hours and/or on weekends.
