The Role
We're hiring our first Forward Deployed Engineer to sit between our customers, our sales lead, and our engineering team. You'll own the customer-facing side of product development: understanding what healthcare providers actually need, shaping how Clara behaves for each customer, and shipping the changes that make Clara work in the real world.
This is not a support role and not a pure engineering role. You'll talk to customers daily, write code when needed, and have direct influence over what we build next.
What You'll Do
Support customer relationships post-sale. Act as a technical point of contact for live accounts alongside our sales lead and CS team. Help troubleshoot issues and make sure Clara is delivering value.
Translate stakeholder needs into product. Work with sales, clinical operations, and engineering to understand what customers and internal teams need. Identify which requests are one-off configuration vs. real product gaps. Bring that signal back to engineering.
Ship customer-specific changes. Clara's architecture is designed for per-customer customization through strategy files. You'll write and modify these strategies, tune prompts, adjust call flows, and ship small features end-to-end.
Drive product improvement. You'll have broad exposure across customers and internal teams. We expect you to form strong opinions about what to build next and advocate for them.
Support implementation. Help onboard new customers, EHR integration discovery, use case scoping, call flow design, go-live coordination.
Improve how we operate. Build internal tooling, write runbooks, identify recurring issues, and make the team more effective over time.
What We're Looking For
Required:
5+ years in a role that combined engineering with cross-functional or customer-facing work (FDE, solutions engineer, implementation engineer, technical CSM, product engineer, or similar)
Hands-on experience building voice AI or conversational AI systems (e.g., STT/TTS pipelines, LLM-driven dialogue, real-time voice agents)
Comfortable writing and reading TypeScript/Node.js. You don't need to be a senior IC, but you should be able to ship a feature, debug a bug, and review a PR
Strong written and verbal communication. You'll work with clinical operations leaders, compliance teams, sales, and engineers, sometimes in the same week
Track record of identifying product gaps from stakeholder conversations and driving them to resolution
Self-directed. You'll often work across teams with minimal oversight
Preferred:
Healthcare experience - you've worked with clinical, operational, or compliance teams at a healthcare company. Comfortable with HIPAA, EHR workflows, and conversations with clinical operations leaders.
Experience integrating with different EHRs
Familiarity with AWS, GraphQL, React etc
Experience at an early-stage startup (Series A or earlier)
