Position Summary
This is an exciting time to join the Colorado Rockies as we continue to evolve how technology, data, and baseball expertise come together across Baseball Operations. Baseball Systems is helping build the tools and infrastructure that will support the organization’s next chapter, turning data, scouting insights, and organizational knowledge into intuitive applications that help our people evaluate talent, develop players, identify opportunities, and make informed baseball decisions.
As a Developer on Baseball Systems, you’ll help build the tools Baseball Operations relies on every day. Your primary focus will be Applications: designing and building the internal web applications that serve scouting, player development, player acquisition, and research, and owning features from data access and backend services through to the interfaces our staff use. You’ll work directly with scouts, analysts, developers, and Baseball Operations leaders to solve meaningful problems and modernize how information is used across the organization.
Baseball Systems is a small team, and the work does not stop at the application layer. Where applicable, you’ll also support our Data Platform and ML Engineering work, whether that means building a pipeline that feeds an application, improving how data is modeled and served, or helping put a model output in front of the staff who use it. You’ll grow across the stack while working alongside senior engineers and contributing to our engineering standards.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Build and maintain the internal web applications that serve scouting, player development, player acquisition, and research across Baseball Operations, owning features from data access through to the interface.
- Develop the backend services, APIs, and data access that power our applications, along with the user interfaces built on top of them.
- Build intuitive, reliable experiences for technical and non-technical users alike, following the product direction set by Baseball Systems.
- Integrate a range of data sources and formats to aggregate, model, and visualize statistical and qualitative information.
- Support the Data Platform team where applicable, contributing to the pipelines, data models, and data quality checks that our applications depend on.
- Support ML Engineering where applicable, helping integrate models into applications and building the services and tooling that deliver model outputs to staff.
- Write well-tested, maintainable code and maintain existing applications as requirements change or issues arise.
- Follow and contribute to engineering best practices related to code quality, documentation, testing, version control, and code review.
- Partner with analysts, developers, and Baseball Operations stakeholders to translate business needs into effective software solutions.
Our Team & Environment
Baseball Systems is the engineering group within Baseball Operations, spanning Applications, Data Platform, and ML Engineering. We build and own the internal platform, working side by side with the analysts, scouts, and researchers who use it. This is a collaborative, on-site role, and you’ll partner daily with the people your work supports, with real ownership over the features you build.
Our applications are modern, typed, full-stack web applications built on a major cloud platform, alongside a modern data platform and the machine learning workflows that run on it. The environment is actively evolving, so you’ll have input into tooling and design decisions rather than inherit a fixed, legacy system. Experience with our exact technology stack is not required; we value strong engineering fundamentals and the ability to learn new technologies.
Job Qualifications
- Two or more years of professional software development experience, or an equivalent combination of experience and demonstrated capability.
- Experience building and maintaining production web applications, including both backend services and user-facing interfaces.
- Proficiency in a typed language such as TypeScript, with working knowledge of a modern component-based front-end framework (such as Svelte, React, or Vue) and core front-end fundamentals including HTML and CSS.
- Experience building backend services and APIs.
- Solid SQL skills and experience working with relational databases and modern ORMs.
- Experience with a major cloud platform, such as AWS, Azure, or GCP.
- Experience writing automated tests, including unit and end-to-end tests.
- Eagerness to learn, take feedback through code review, and grow across application, data, and ML engineering.
- Strong communication and collaboration with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with baseball data and Baseball Operations workflows, such as scouting, player development, player acquisition, or research.
- Experience building data-rich user interfaces and statistical visualizations, preferably with baseball data.
- Experience with a full-stack or server-side rendering framework, such as SvelteKit, Next.js, or similar.
- Exposure to data engineering tools and practices, such as Spark, Databricks, dbt, or orchestrated data pipelines.
- Exposure to machine learning workflows, such as training, deploying, or serving models.
- Working knowledge of Python, or the ability to pick it up quickly for data and ML work.
- Familiarity with infrastructure as code (Terraform, AWS CDK, Pulumi, or CloudFormation), CI/CD pipelines, and containerized development using Docker.
- Bachelor’s degree in a related technical field, completion of an immersive technical program, or equivalent practical experience.
- Comfort using AI-assisted development tools responsibly as part of a modern engineering workflow.
Work Schedule & Location
- This role generally works standard business hours. Occasional evening or weekend work may be needed to support critical production issues, releases, or time-sensitive Baseball Operations needs.
- This is a full-time, on-site position based in the Denver metropolitan area. Remote work is not available for this role.
- This position works standard Mountain Time business hours and will travel to Spring Training, affiliate sites, or Club events as needed.
Physical Job Requirements
- This role operates in a professional office and stadium environment. Occasional exposure to crowd noise, outdoor weather conditions, and extended hours during homestands, events, or special functions may be required.
- Must be able to remain in a stationary position for extended periods, including sitting at a desk and attending meetings.
- Must be able to move throughout office, stadium, and event spaces to access equipment and interact with staff and vendors.
- Must be able to communicate effectively by phone, video conference, and in person and exchange accurate information.
- Ability to lift up to 15 pounds occasionally, such as a laptop bag or related office materials.
Compensation & Benefits
- Annual Salary Range: $90,000 - $110,000 a year. This is a regular-status, full-time, exempt position.
- As a candidate for this position, your salary and related elements of compensation will be contingent upon your work experience, education, job-related skills, and any other factors the Colorado Rockies consider relevant to the hiring decision for this position.
