Job Description:

There is an exciting opportunity for an Intermediate Software Engineer to join Onni Capital in Vancouver.

Onni Capital is a new investment and company building platform within the Onni Group. Operating at the intersection of a venture studio, private equity firm, and family office, we build new companies, invest in exceptional founders, and pursue opportunities where Onni’s capital, operating platform, real estate portfolio, and industry relationships create a meaningful advantage.

Onni Capital is being built from the ground up with the speed, ambition, and working style of a technology company. Our team works across venture creation, technology, private investments, fund investments, and special opportunities.

This role exists to ship the software those companies are built on. You will build and ship production software across the stack with semi independent ownership, taking well scoped problems from design through deployment. The products you work on run real parts of the business and are used by real operators, tenants, and internal teams, not by a hypothetical future user. This is an opportunity to own products end to end, work directly with the people whose problems you are solving, and help set the engineering standards for a team that is still being built!

Why Onni Capital

Most engineering roles put you several layers away from the business. Here you will sit beside the people who own the problem, the budget, and the decision.

Onni’s portfolio provides a rare testing ground. Products can be built around real operational problems, deployed into active businesses and properties, and measured against real revenue and real cost, usually within weeks rather than quarters.

You will not inherit a decade of legacy architecture or a ticket queue. You will be expected to contribute to how systems are designed, how the team ships, and what standards the codebase holds to.

Some products will scale into businesses. Others will be shut down quickly when the evidence does not support them. Both are signs that the process is working.

How We Work

Onni Capital is being designed as a high ownership, low bureaucracy team.

We work in small project groups, test ideas quickly, put early products in front of users, and make decisions based on evidence rather than hierarchy.

Team members are expected to:

  • Challenge assumptions and communicate directly

  • Take responsibility for outcomes, not simply produce recommendations

  • Use modern AI and development tools to work faster and produce better results

  • Share unfinished work early and improve it through feedback

  • Move comfortably between strategic analysis and hands on execution

  • Know when to continue investing in an idea and when to stop

  • Operate effectively without a detailed playbook

This is not a role for someone who wants months of consensus building, a rigid job description, or a narrowly defined set of responsibilities.

It is for someone who learns quickly, takes initiative, enjoys solving ambiguous problems, and wants to help build something from the ground up.

What You Will Do

  • Build and ship production features across the stack with semi independent ownership, taking well scoped problems from design through deployment

  • Write production code that holds up to senior engineering review, and contribute to code reviews of your peers

  • Contribute to code architecture, API design, and testing practices within established team standards

  • Take validated prototypes from the venture studio team and harden them into production systems

  • Work within existing CI and CD pipelines, container orchestration, and cloud deployment infrastructure, and contribute improvements as needed

  • Help maintain environment management across development, staging, and production, and respond to monitoring and alerting for deployed services

  • Implement application security features, including credential handling, secrets management, audit logging, and access controls, following established team standards

  • Handle sensitive financial and tenant information responsibly, in line with company data protection standards

  • Participate in incident response when things go wrong, following established procedures

  • Build integrations between internal systems and external APIs and third party services

  • Work cross functionally with non technical stakeholders to translate business needs into technical solutions

  • Document architecture, decisions, and operating standards so successful approaches can be repeated across the team

  • Contribute to internal product reviews, demonstrations, and Onni Capital events

    What You Bring

    • Strong proficiency in the modern TypeScript and React ecosystem, including Next.js, TypeScript, React, REST APIs, and relational databases. Bonus points for experience with Supabase and Postgres

    • Comfortable in Python for backend services and AI and agent tooling, using FastAPI or similar

    • Solid backend systems design and API development experience

    • Hands on experience with DevOps practices, including CI and CD pipelines, Docker, and containerisation

    • Regularly uses AI assisted development tools, specifically Claude Code, as a core part of your workflow, with the judgment to know when to trust output versus verify it

    • Practical experience integrating LLMs into production applications via provider APIs such as Anthropic, OpenAI, or OpenRouter, including prompt engineering, context management, streaming responses, tool and function calling, structured output, and evaluating output quality

    • Foundational understanding of application security, including authentication, authorisation, secrets management, and audit logging

    • Ability to work semi independently. You can pick up a problem, break it down, see it through to production, and know when to ask for help rather than spin

    • Strong interpersonal skills. You know how to work with people, communicate clearly, give and receive constructive feedback, and build trust on a team

    • A bias toward action and comfort making progress with incomplete information

    • Comfort working in a small, fast moving team where responsibilities change as projects develop

    • High personal standards for accuracy, quality, ownership, and follow throug

    Nice to Have

    • Experience with tools such as Claude, Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Linear, Slack, Databricks, Microsoft Azure, or similar platforms

    • Experience with open source AI agent frameworks such as LangChain, CrewAI, or AutoGen

    • Experience with retrieval augmented generation (RAG) and vector databases

    • Infrastructure as code experience

    • Familiarity with real estate technology or property management platforms

    • Experience with data pipeline tools such as Databricks or Airflow

    • Background in regulated industries with strict audit and compliance requirements

    • Experience with React Native or cross platform mobile development

    • Experience with Twilio or voice and telephony APIs

    • Previous founder, side project, or entrepreneurial experience

    What Makes This Role Different

You will see the full lifecycle of a product rather than one narrow piece of it.

On a single product, you may be involved in:

    • Sitting in on the user interviews that define the problem

    • Shaping the architecture and data model from the start

    • Building and shipping the first working version

    • Deploying it into an operating business and watching real users hit it

    • Instrumenting it so that impact can actually be measured

    • Hardening a validated prototype into a production system

    • Presenting the build directly to senior executives

    • Deciding, with the team, whether it is worth continuing to invest in

    • The expectation is high ownership. You will be accountable for what you ship and how it behaves in production.

    Salary Range:

    $90,000 - $120,000 Per Year

    AI Use:

This role may involve the use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools to support research, analysis, content development, design, reporting, or operational efficiency. Employees are expected to use AI responsibly and in compliance with company policies, data privacy requirements, confidentiality obligations, and applicable laws.
