Emerson are hiring a Software Development Intern

Junior Round Rock, Texas, United States posted 2026-09-08

Apply for this position →

You will join one of our software development teams that build DeltaV, our flagship distributed process control system used by leading chemical, life sciences, and energy companies around the world. Working alongside experienced engineers and mentors, you will take on a summer project drawn from our real backlog. Potential project opportunities include building new application features and user interfaces, developing services and APIs, improving performance and reliability in existing code, or contributing to internal tools that make our products better. Depending on the project, your work may also involve exploring AI/ML capabilities, such as applying machine learning models or AI-assisted features to real product and engineering problems.
No prior industrial automation experience is required. If you enjoy writing code and want to see your work land in a product that customers depend on every day, we will teach you the rest. Many of our engineers joined us straight out of school from a general software development background, and this internship is designed to be a great first exposure to professional software development at scale.

In This Role, Your Responsibilities Will Be:
  • Partner with software engineers and your mentor on a summer project that contributes to the applications, services, and tools behind DeltaV.
  • Design, write, and test code for new features or improvements, from initial idea through working software.
  • Explore how emerging technologies, potentially including AI/ML techniques, can be applied to real product and engineering problems.
  • Participate in code reviews, testing, and debugging, and learn how professional teams keep software release-ready.
  • Take part in agile ceremonies such as sprint planning and retrospectives, along with Hackathons, Tech Talks, and Communities of Practice.
  • Document what you build so the team can maintain and extend your work after your internship ends, and present your results to the team at the end of the summer.

Who You Are:
You enjoy building things with code and are eager to learn new languages, frameworks, and technologies. You like solving problems and can break them down into manageable pieces. You ask questions when something is unfamiliar, communicate effectively, and thrive in a team-oriented environment. You take pride in your work and are motivated by seeing what you build become part of a product that customers rely on.

For This Role, You Will Need:
  • Currently enrolled in an accredited college/university and returning to school following the internship.
  • Pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer/Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Coursework or project experience in at least one programming language (such as C#, Java, Python, C/C++, or JavaScript).
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States. Sponsorship will not be provided for this position.

Preferred Qualifications That Set You Apart:
  • Junior or Senior standing.
  • Experience with C# or another object-oriented language, and comfort working in an IDE such as Visual Studio or VS Code.
  • Familiarity with Git or another source control system.
  • Exposure to application development concepts such as .NET, web or desktop UI frameworks, REST APIs, or relational databases and SQL.
  • Experience with Python, including data or machine learning libraries such as pandas, NumPy, scikit-learn, PyTorch, or TensorFlow.
  • Coursework or personal projects involving AI/ML, data analysis, or working with large language model APIs.
  • Interest in cloud platforms (Azure, AWS) or containers (Docker, Kubernetes). Coursework or personal projects count.
  • Experience using AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot.
  • Previous internship, class project, hackathon, or personal project experience in software development.
