About Luzern Risk
Luzern Risk is a technology-first captive insurance manager. We form and run captive insurance companies end to end: structuring, licensing, governance, accounting, claims, and regulatory compliance, delivered through an AI-native platform where software agents run the workflows and licensed experts direct, approve, and advise. The model is working: 15+ captives under management, more than $50M in premium, licenses in 11 U.S. domiciles plus the Cayman Islands, and zero client turnover.
The mandate for the Software Engineer is to build the platform that runs this business and to stay close to the people who use it. Engineering is small and deliberate, and every hire moves the roadmap. This is not a role where you pull tickets someone else wrote. You will sit with the people whose work our software supports, understand what they need, and ship the thing that solves it.
You will own features end to end and treat AI as a core building block rather than a feature bolted on the side. The best product ideas here come from watching a licensed expert or a client struggle with a real task, not from a planning document, and you will be close enough to that work to have those ideas yourself.
Core Responsibilities
• Build the product: own features end to end across the stack, from the interfaces experts and clients work in to the services and data behind them. You are comfortable moving wherever the problem is.
• Work side by side with users: sit directly with business users and clients to turn a messy manual workflow into a clean, reliable product surface, then watch how they use it and make it better.
• Make it AI-native: use modern AI models as a core part of what you build, with judgment about where automation earns trust and where a human stays in the loop.
• Ship and own: move fast, keep quality high, and take responsibility when something breaks. You see your work through adoption, not just merge.
• Feed the roadmap: carry what you learn from real users back into what we build next, so the platform gets sharper with every deployment.
Successful candidates will demonstrate
• 3+ years building and shipping production software.
• Strong full-stack ability. You can own a feature from interface to data and are not precious about which layer you work in.
• Experience integrating LLMs and agentic workflows into production web apps, and an understanding of how their behavior shapes the product.
• Ease with people who are not engineers. You can ask an operator or client the questions that surface unstated requirements and explain trade-offs without jargon.
• Product judgment. You care about the outcome for the user and have opinions about what should get built and why.
• A pull toward startups: ownership, speed, impact, and comfort with the ambiguity that comes with them.
• Smart, low ego, and driven to get to the bottom of hard problems.
Our Stack
We don’t expect you to have used every tool in this list on day one. A strong full-stack foundation and the ability to pick up new patterns quickly are what matter most.
• TypeScript across the product. Next.js front end, NestJS back end.
• Python for our analytics models.
• Event-sourced CQRS services, Kafka, PostgreSQL.
• Auth0 and SpiceDB for auth.
• GCP, GKE, GitHub.
Where This Goes
Captive management is the entry point, not the destination. The platform we are building for our own book is designed to become infrastructure for how companies finance risk. Early product engineers will have shaped the systems, and the standards, that the rest of engineering grows on top of.
