POSITION OVERVIEW
The Engineering Manager – Software Team coordinates and participates in the development of projects for new technology, console software, and firmware. Leads a team of Software Engineers and Developers to enhance the functionality of our fitness equipment while partnering with Project Engineering, Product Marketing, Graphical UX/UI, Web Development, and Design Quality Assurance teams. Leading by example, the ideal candidate will leverage sound technical knowledge to improve products and processes while guiding and inspiring team members. Has a strong capability to anticipate and resolve engineering development challenges early and effectively. Blends solid engineering skill and personnel leadership excellence.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Personnel:
- Assists R&D leadership team in attracting and hiring top engineering talent
- Provides work direction to lower-level engineers, trains and mentors staff in product development processes
- Understands and coaches team members to follow existing coding conventions, and to identify and use design patterns
- Coaches engineers in striving to achieve 100% KPI score
Product Development:
- Product Specification review and communication with various marketing and factory staff to set the development plan
- Translation of product requirements into actionable technical development tasks
- Assist PM's & engineering staff in working through any roadblocks to delivery
- Monitors resource use by participating in project sign-offs at critical stage-gates
- Lead communication window for technical development teams between America and Asia
Software Development:
- Establish, implement, and update processes and workflows to meet customer needs and optimize team efficiency
- Support scalable systems that meet business requirements
- Coordinate with internal and external entities, as needed, to accomplish goals
- Enforce code standards and development best practices
- Lead team meetings and coordinate with other functional leaders
- Represent the global software R&D team, its projects, and deliverables at all global development status reviews
- R&D-as-one-team method for all development, testing, and customer/end-user support. No-excuse approach in working alongside all global web, design quality assurance, hardware, and related development teams.
- Peer-to-peer leadership, knowledge sharing, and implementing integrated development practices with global product development teams and factories.
Production Support:
- Review quality and test data, perform product sample reviews and make design decisions, support value-add / value-engineer opportunities for cost and manufacturing efficiency
- Train Asia-based engineering and factory quality teams on design and functional requirements
- Support systems, resolve outages, and be on-call during non-standard business hours
Management:
- Engages in the typical responsibilities of a manager, requiring planning, evaluating, organizing, integrating, and controlling
Supervisory:
- Responsible for staffing, terminations, disciplinary actions, training, and developing subordinates
- Responsible for completing adequate performance documentation on time
- Responsible for ensuring the accuracy of timecards and approving them promptly
Marginal Job Functions:
- Other projects as needed.
Requirements
Education:
- 4-year degree in relevant field (Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent experience)
- Advanced degree in Engineering is a plus
Experience:
- 1-5 years of managerial experience, being directly responsible for the work of others
- 5 years of object-oriented programming in a language such as C++, C# or Java; UI based application development; scripting languages such as Python or Javascript
- 5 years of experience with built-in and integration unit testing, writing, or editing technical documentation
- Demonstrated leadership abilities through a record of success
- Knowledge of MCU and ARM Embedded System Development
- Ability to read and understand patents
Other Requirements:
- Ability and willingness to travel both internationally and domestically, communicate with overseas teams during non-business hours
- Ability to work well with numerous diverse groups and individuals
- Ability to lead and inspire a team of engineers
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Travel Requirements:
- A valid driver’s license is required for travel
- This position will be required to travel up to 30% of the time.

Work Environment
This position will require working on-site. The employee must be able to maintain concentration in a variety of work environments and sustain attention to detail while managing multiple priorities. The position requires the ability to reason, analyze information, and make sound decisions promptly. The employee must also be capable of working both independently and collaboratively and of interacting professionally with colleagues, leadership, and external partners.
Physical Requirements
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit for extended periods and use hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, phone, and other standard office equipment. Will be required to communicate both verbally and in writing, view a computer monitor, and perform tasks requiring close vision with the ability to adjust focus. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, reach, bend, stoop, kneel, or crouch to access files, supplies, or other office equipment. The employee must occasionally lift, carry, push, or pull materials weighing up to 20 pounds. Repetitive hand, wrist, and finger motion is required for keyboarding and other clerical tasks.
