Work Schedule: This is a part-time position; 20 hours per week, Monday – Friday, 10:00 am to 3:00 pm; non-exempt position. This is a temporary appointment expiring on or before August 31, 2026, with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon availability of funds. The CREST CATSUS has been recently funded. The center will be able to provide funds, for this position, until – at least – August 31, 2027. .
Overview of Cal State LA and the Center for Advancement toward Sustainable Urban Systems (CATSUS): Cal State LA is the premier comprehensive public university in the heart of Los Angeles and is dedicated to engagement, service, and the public good. Cal State LA is ranked number one in the United States for the upward mobility of its students. The University is a federally designated Hispanic-Serving Institution, Minority-Serving Institution, and Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution. The Center for Advancement toward Sustainable Urban Systems (CATSUS) started its development on September 1, 2022, with the support of a National Science Foundation grant. The Center is part of NSF’s vision to fund Centers of Research Excellence in Science and Technology (CREST) that address issues critical to the advancement of technologies and the resolution of issues that affect the wellbeing of the nation and the world. The Center seeks to advance novel and transformative research focused on issues related to the generation, supply, consumption, protection and revitalization of energy and water systems within the framework of urban environments. Along with conducting research, the Center also aims at educating policymakers and the public about the value of environmentally sustainable energy, and water resource conservation strategies in urban areas, which will substantially mitigate urban contributions to greenhouse gas production and environmental water degradation, advancing the well-being of the planet and people, especially those located in the most vulnerable communities. In addition, the Center is committed to preparing students to excel in higher education and in careers related to STEM fields that will promote the goals and values of sustainable energy and water resources in urban systems.
Position Overview: The Website Developer and Maintenance Specialist is responsible for the ongoing development, enhancement, and maintenance of the official websites for the CREST-CATSUS and Sikand SITI Center programs. The incumbent will ensure that the websites remain up-to-date, functional, accessible, visually appealing, and aligned with program goals. This position will work closely with program faculty, staff, and students to collect, design, and publish content that highlights the research, outreach, and educational activities of both programs.
Essential Functions:
- Website Development & Design:
- Design and implement new website features, layouts, and functionalities based on evolving program needs.
- Ensure website design is mobile-responsive, visually consistent, and user-friendly.
- Maintain compliance with Cal State LA branding guidelines, accessibility (ADA/Section 508), and security standards.
- Content Management:
- Monitor and maintain all web content for accuracy and relevance.
- Upload and update content related to research activities, student achievements, publications, events, announcements, and media provided by faculty, staff, and students.
- Optimize media (images, videos, documents) for web use to enhance performance.
- Website Monitoring & Maintenance:
- Regularly audit the site for broken links, performance issues, outdated information, and functionality problems.
- Implement necessary patches, software updates, and backups.
- Ensure site uptime, fast load speeds, and compatibility across all major browsers and platforms.
- Collaboration & Communication:
- Serve as the primary website liaison for CATSUS and SITI Center web-related needs.
- Collaborate with IT support and university web services as necessary.
- Train faculty, staff, or students (if needed) in basic website updating tools and workflows.
- Analytics & Improvements:
- Track and report on site traffic and user behavior using analytics tools (e.g., Google Analytics).
- Recommend and implement improvements to increase usability, engagement, and discoverability.
Required Qualifications:
- Proven experience in website development, content management, and maintenance.
- Proficiency in web development tools and languages (e.g., HTML, CSS, JavaScript, WordPress or similar CMS).
- Familiarity with web accessibility standards and responsive design principles.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working in an academic or research environment.
- Knowledge of SEO best practices and web analytics tools.
- Familiarity with image and video editing tools (e.g., Photoshop, Canva, Adobe Premiere).
Work Conditions:
- Flexible hours may be available based on workload and project deadlines.
- Primarily onsite with potential for hybrid work arrangements as approved.
- May involve periodic meetings with faculty or center leadership.
The incumbent must demonstrate an interest or ability in working in a multicultural/multiethnic environment. A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with the UAS.
