Job Summary
The Software Engineer II is a hands-on technical leader within the Software Development team, responsible for the architectural integrity and performance of core applications and the coordination of day-to-day development work. Working primarily with ColdFusion and React, this individual translates business requirements into technical solutions, guides Software Engineer I team members, and drives assigned projects from planning through completion. The position combines software development with work allocation, mentoring, progress monitoring, and stakeholder communication to support reliable, timely delivery.
Duties and Responsibilities
- System Architecture: Lead the design and scalability of software applications, ensuring integrations align with long-term business strategy.
- Standards and Governance: Define and maintain coding standards and development best practices to keep the codebase secure, performant, and maintainable.
- Integration Leadership: Architect complex API integrations and data exchange workflows, researching third-party system requirements to ensure seamless connectivity.
- Process Optimization: Identify inefficiencies in the development lifecycle and implement improvements, including CI/CD, automated testing, and process automation.
- Full-Stack Ownership: Develop and maintain nationwide enterprise applications, from frontend React components to backend ColdFusion logic and MySQL database optimization.
- Project Planning and Delivery: Translate business goals into technical milestones, estimates, acceptance criteria, and deadlines. Coordinate dependencies and available resources with management and monitor work through testing, deployment, and completion.
- Work Allocation and Follow-Up: Coordinate and assign development tasks within management-approved priorities, considering team capacity and skill levels. Track progress in the project management system and follow up on outstanding commitments.
- Team Leadership and Mentorship: Provide daily technical direction, onboarding support, coaching, and code-review feedback to Software Engineer I team members. Identify training needs and provide management with factual input on work quality and delivery.
- Progress Reporting and Escalation: Keep task status, owners, deadlines, and blockers current. Provide regular progress updates to management and promptly escalate risks to deadlines with proposed solutions and revised estimates for approval.
- Cross-Functional Coordination: Serve as the technical point of contact for Customer Service and other business units, clarifying requirements, communicating priorities, and managing expectations regarding scope and delivery.
- Quality and Release Readiness: Coordinate code reviews, testing, documentation, and deployment readiness. Verify completed work against acceptance criteria and address defects before closing assignments.
- Application Support and Documentation: Coordinate troubleshooting of application issues with IT and business teams, prioritize issues by business impact, and maintain technical documentation and end-user guidance.
- Reliability and Accountability: Maintain regular, punctual attendance and availability during assigned work hours and scheduled meetings, consistent with company policy and approved arrangements. Complete assigned work by agreed deadlines and promptly communicate attendance issues, blockers, or anticipated delays.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Skills and Abilities
- Tech Stack: Proven experience with HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript (ES6+), and React.Backend and Logic: Experience with ColdFusion (willingness to be trained is acceptable) and MySQL.
- API Expertise: Deep understanding of REST and SOAP methodologies and JSON, XML, and CSV data formats.
- Design Patterns: Knowledge of software design and architectural patterns.
- Tooling and Deployment: Proficiency with Git and project/ticket tracking software, such as Jira or Azure DevOps, and familiarity with CI/CD and application deployment in AWS or Azure.
- Problem Solving: Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills with a focus on root-cause analysis.
- Leadership: Ability to guide developers, delegate clearly, provide constructive feedback, resolve technical disagreements, and build a collaborative team.
- Project Coordination: Ability to estimate effort, prioritize competing requests, monitor multiple assignments, and adjust plans in coordination with management.
- Communication: Ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders, document decisions, and provide concise progress and risk updates.
- Self-Management and Follow-Through: Ability to work independently, meet commitments, maintain accurate task records, and address delays proactively.
- Professional Judgment: Attention to detail, confidentiality when handling sensitive information, and sound judgment about when to escalate concerns.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Application Development, or a related field required.
- Minimum of 2–3 years of professional software development experience.
- Technical Requirements:
- JavaScript/React: 3–4 years.
- APIs/Integrations: 3–4 years.
- CSS/Frontend: 3–4 years.
- Database/Backend: 2–3 years.
- AWS Certified Developer Associate or similar development-centric certifications preferred.
Physical Requirements
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift 25 pounds at times.
